The excitement of flamenco fusion arrives in force! Spanish dancer and choreographer Shelina Sanchez Benejama presents her emblematic show YALÁH in Montreal, importing the vibrant and raw energy of urban flamenco directly onto Quebec stages.
The YALÁH Phenomenon: When tradition meets the street.
Shelina Sanchez Benejama has established herself as a key figure in the renewal of Spanish dance by breaking with traditional codes. With her company YALÁH Flamenco Fusión, she offers a unique artistic signature:
• A bold fusion: A striking blend of the intensity of flamenco (tangos, bulerías) and urban culture (hip-hop, Arabic rhythms and Bollywood influences).
• A modern aesthetic: Strong visual tableaux, ranging from contemporary fringed costumes to more nomadic and daring influences.
• Raw energy: An approach focused on physical power, inhabited movement («movement with soul») and the fervor inherent in Spanish urban renewal.
What can we expect from this stopover in Montreal?
This project translates the warmth of Spanish tablaos into a resolutely modern and cosmopolitan version, perfectly aligned with Montreal's cultural DNA. Audiences can expect a synchronized, technically proficient, and visceral performance, driven by choreographic direction that takes flamenco far beyond its Andalusian borders.
